Welcome to the "3000 ibones" trek!
Our 3000 Ibones Trek in the Pyrenees is a challenging and breathtaking 7 day high-mountain hiking route that takes you through some of the most stunning landscapes in the Pyrenean range.
This trek is a rewarding adventure for those who seek solitude, stunning natural beauty, and the challenge of high-altitude hiking. It’s a chance to explore one of Europe’s most dramatic mountain ranges while immersing yourself in the unique culture and history of the Pyrenees.
We take a traditional route and add spice to it by taking variations using the Pyrenean High Route or the GR11/GR10 to cross over mountain passes between Spain and France thus taking in the best scenery the region has to offer.
The name "3000 Ibones" refers to the numerous "ibones" (Pyrenean term for glacial lakes). The trek can reach several peaks over 2,500 meters in elevation. This trek is ideal for experienced hikers and mountaineers who are looking for an adventure in a less crowded but equally spectacular environment compared to the Alps.
Key Features of the 3000 Ibones Trek:
Location: The trek is located in the Spanish Pyrenees, primarily in the region north west of Vignemale in the Parc National des Pyrenees and the surrounding areas. The region is known for its dramatic limestone peaks, deep valleys and pristine glacial lakes.
Duration: The trek typically takes a week to complete, depending on the route and pace. It covers approximately 74 kilometers with significant elevation gain and loss each day.
Highlights:
- Ibones (Glacial Lakes): The trek passes by numerous ibones, such as Ibón de Plan, Ibón de Piedrafita, and others, which are known for their crystal-clear waters and stunning reflections of the surrounding peaks.
- Peaks and Passes: Our route crosses some significant mountain passes and gives the opportunity to climb several peaks over 2500 meters. The route frequently crosses the Spanish/French border
- Diverse Landscapes: From lush green valleys to rugged alpine terrain, the trek offers a variety of landscapes, including limestone cliffs, glacial cirques, and high-altitude meadows.
Difficulty: The trek is stenuous and requires a good level of fitness, experience in mountain hiking, and proper gear. Some sections involve simple scrambling, exposure to heights, and navigating rugged terrain. Weather conditions in the Pyrenees can change rapidly, so hikers must be prepared for all eventualities.
Best Time to Go: The optimal time for our 3000 Ibones Trek is from late June to end August, when the snow has melted, and the weather is more stable. However, even in summer, hikers should be prepared for cold temperatures at high altitudes and occasional storms.
Accommodation: Accommodation options along the route include mountain refuges (huts) and/or camping. Refuges provide basic facilities such as bunk beds, meals, and water, but it’s essential to book in advance, especially during peak season. We can assist with reservations.
- Logistics:
- Our trek starts in Baños de Panticosa, a popular mountain trailhead north of Huesca, which serves as a gateway to the Pyrenees
- Hikers can arrange transportation to and from the trailheads
- Preparation:
- Physical Fitness: Train for long days of hiking with significant elevation gain.
- Gear: Bring sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing, a waterproof jacket, a sleeping bag (for refuges), and a good backpack. Microspikes may be advisable early in the season (July) if there is still snow.
