Our Hikes in the Alpujarras

We’ve put together 5 fantastic day hikes to show you the absolute best of the Alpujarras. You’ll be in great hands with Richard and Kiersten from Spanish Highs—they’re both seasoned local guides. Richard actually wrote the Cicerone guidebook for the Sierra Nevada mountains, and Kiersten is a passionate and super knowledgeable nature guide. You’re in for a treat!

Hike 1 - Walking Over Lemons

This walk takes you on a straight path between the villages of Ferreirola and Ticola, with a stop by Chris Stewart's finca along the way.

We’ll take the old drovers' trail, which was once used to get to markets in Órgiva. The route crosses the Trevélez River gorge and then heads up a zigzagging path on the other side.

If we’re lucky and Chris is around, we might even get the chance to meet him!

Hike 2 - Sierra Nevada, Mountains & valleys

This hike takes you right into the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains, with some stunning high-altitude views. You’ll climb through pine forests before emerging onto open hillsides, eventually reaching the Puerta del Molina. This spot is an amazing viewpoint, offering a full panorama of the Sierra Nevada and all its major peaks.

After soaking in the views, we’ll head back down on a dirt track and join up with the long-distance Sulayr trail (GR240). The descent winds through beautiful forested slopes, bringing us all the way back to the village of Capileira, where we can celebrate with a well-earned cold drink.

It’s a totally fun, unique, and rewarding day out!

Hike 3 - Waterways & Forests above Lanjaron

No transport needed today—this walk starts and ends right at your hotel! It’s a really varied loop that’s always a hit with our guests. First, we’ll check out the Arab Castle and stroll along the cliff tops of the Tajos de Colorao across the way.

After a short climb, we’ll reach the Ermita of the Tajos de la Cruz, an awesome viewpoint with stunning views over the town. From there, we’ll head north and pick up the "Camino de las Sierras," an old mountain trail used by drovers. We’ll follow this until we can take a less obvious path that leads us down to cross the Río Lanjarón via an old bridge.

The next part is a highlight—winding through a series of picturesque irrigation channels and chestnut woods. Finally, we’ll make a steep descent back to the hotel in Lanjarón. A fantastic mix of history, nature, and great views!

Hike 4 - Medieval Way, Taha del Pitres

We’ll kick off the day with a scenic drive through the Alpujarras, heading to the Taha de Pitres area. This spot is known for its charming white villages, dramatic gorges, and loads of plants and wildlife.

Most of the hike follows old medieval trails that wind through the hills and villages. We’ll start in Mecina Fondales and head downhill to the picturesque village of Fondales. From there, we’ll turn east and make our way to Ferreirola, which sits high above the Trevélez gorge.

Next, we’ll climb up to visit the super quaint village of Atalbéitar before continuing uphill to reach the road leading to Portugos. We’ll take quiet back trails to Pitres and then make a steep descent back to where we started in Mecina. A day full of history, stunning views, and charming villages!

This walk is partly covered in our trip report "My Favourite Walk in The Alpujarras" which you would enjoy reading

Hike 5 - River Walking in the Lecrin Valley

Cool, fun, and totally unique! Get ready for some amazing day hikes in and around the rivers and gorges of the Lecrin Valley.

We’ll start and finish in the town of Albuñuelas, where we’ll park the cars. From there, it’s down to the river valley, where the adventure begins—right in the water! The trail winds in and out of the river, bypassing any tricky spots. There are a couple of boulders to climb, but they’re no big deal.

It feels like you’re exploring a hidden piece of the Amazon! The whole way, you’re under a lush green canopy, with plants and insects you’d rarely see anywhere else. The halfway point brings you to a massive waterfall, perfect for a fun (and refreshing!) shower. A truly unforgettable experience!
