Scrambling & soaring with eagles Sierra de Huetor, Granada
It all began when Kiersten Rowland, our resident Spanish Highs expert twitcher, decided she wanted to tick off the Ring Ouzel. This bird seems to have a liking for hawthorn bushes and tough craggy hillsides. We thought we knew just the spot that might attract these elusive birds in an area of mountains north of Granada in the Sierra de Huetor.
The Sierra Nevada Poppy (Papaver Lapeyrousianum)
This is quite a remarkable plant, unique but endangered. We found growing a few days ago on a windswept ridge of Mulhacén at 3300m. In almost 100 ascents of Mulhacén, mainland Spain's highest mountain, I had never come across this pretty flower and yet there it was flourishing between the rock slabs.
Skijoring in Spain, backcountry skiing with excitable husky!
Nothing beats ski touring up and down a mountain (skijoring) with man's best friend, in my case our husky, named "Khumbu"! Spain's Sierra Nevada mountains offer many opportunities for backcountry skiing with or without our four legged friends.
Pine Processionary Caterpillars dangers, Sierra Nevada
These pests are cyclical and every three or four years, reach a maximum. Processionary caterpillars eat the leaves of the pines. These parasites leave the pine caterpillars just before end it. Although affected trees may seem dry, they are in fact dying.
A night under the stars with my husky friend, Khumbu
We camped in the upper Lanjaron valley by streams and under a spectacular night sky. This was to be his first overnight trip. My lightweight summer backpack felt strangely heavy, weighed down by the additional items such as dog food, extra water and a various assortment of chains, leads, slings and karabiners, in a vain attempt to control a huskies instincts for freedom.
Silver-studded Blue Butterflies on Mulhacen, Sierra Nevada
This beautiful butterfly rests on the branches at dusk and makes for a perfect photo opportunity against the fading light.
5 best Mallorca mountain days scrambling & birdwatching
The mountains of Mallorca are beckoning and we are set to visit again in September. The week long trip will combine some amazing mountain and gorge scrambling with opportunities to see the black vultures and eleonoras falcons, rare on mainland Spain. Combined with the mountain and sea backdrops it is a potent mix.
